Interior Partitions & Screens

An interior partition panel is not selected by material name alone. The safe specification starts with panel size, edge support, fixing detail, expected contact, privacy target, cleaning routine and the fire requirement for the finished space. Acrylic can suit appearance-led, well-protected screens; polycarbonate is usually the better starting point where knocks, frequent handling or breakage consequences matter. The designer still has to approve the installed assembly.

Define the partition support

A sheet that looks rigid as a small sample may move noticeably when installed as a tall panel. Record the clear opening, panel orientation and every supported edge before discussing thickness. A four-side frame, two vertical posts and a free-standing screen place different demands on the same sheet.

For a free-standing divider, include the base detail and the expected push or incidental contact. For a framed wall, identify which member carries the panel and whether the sheet is decorative infill or part of a guarding function. Choose acrylic or polycarbonate by the failure risk

Acrylic is often chosen where optical appearance, a harder everyday surface and a polished edge are more important than severe impact. Polycarbonate is considered where a panel may be struck, leaned on or used in a busy circulation area. Those are selection directions, not a universal approval: compare the exact grade, surface and documentation offered for the project.

Frosted and textured options can obscure views and make handling marks less obvious. State the required privacy distance, viewing direction and background lighting. “Frosted” does not define how silhouettes appear, so evaluate a full-size or representative sample in the intended room rather than judging a small swatch on a desk.

Confirm fire and cleaning requirements

Do not write a generic fire label into the schedule. Name the jurisdiction, classification standard, required class and whether the evidence must cover the sheet alone or the complete wall build-up. The quotation should identify the grade, thickness, colour and report supplied. A report for another formulation or thickness is not automatically transferable.

Cleaning can be just as decisive in healthcare, education, washrooms and food-service interiors. Record the cleaner, concentration, contact time and frequency. Also identify whether the exposed face is plain, hard-coated, printed or textured. Manufacturer guidance for polycarbonate warns that incompatible or abrasive cleaners can damage the surface; a small-area compatibility trial on the offered construction is a sensible approval step.

• Ask the facility team for its actual detergent and disinfectant list.
• Check gaskets, sealants and adhesive tapes for material compatibility.
• Define an acceptable level of haze, scratching and staining after the trial.
• Write the approved cleaning method into handover information.

Approve installation details

The sample approval should cover more than colour. Build one representative corner or fixing zone using the proposed sheet, frame, gasket and fastener. Check edge clearance, hole quality, clamp pressure, visual distortion and how the panel moves without binding. If privacy matters, view it from both sides with the actual lighting on.

Separate factory acceptance from site acceptance. Factory inspection can confirm sheet identity, finished dimensions, hole positions, edge condition, protective film and packing. Site inspection must confirm frame alignment, support, movement allowance, fastener torque, sealant compatibility and damaged-film removal. This division prevents a frame problem from being treated as a sheet defect.

Common partition failures to prevent

• Visible bowing: the panel was selected from thickness alone without checking the unsupported opening.
• Cracks around fixings: holes are too close to edges, corners are sharp, or bolts restrain thermal movement.
• Surface crazing or haze: an unapproved cleaner, solvent, sealant or adhesive contacted a stressed panel.
• Wrong privacy level: a sample was approved against a blank wall instead of the real viewing distance and lighting.
• Compliance gap: a material brochure was submitted where the project required evidence for a named grade or assembly.

Send the opening schedule, drawings, material preference, finish, colour, quantity and destination. Add the support arrangement, hole and edge details, privacy target, expected contact, cleaning chemicals and the exact fire-document request. If the requirement is not settled, ask for acrylic and polycarbonate options as separate lines so the trade-off remains visible.

For cleaning and chemical-compatibility context, review the applicable sheet maker’s instructions for the offered grade. SABIC’s published LEXAN sheet guidance is a useful example of why cleaner chemistry and surface construction must be checked, but it does not certify a different supplier’s sheet or a finished partition.
