Abrasion-Resistant Polycarbonate: How to Compare Test Reports

Two abrasion-resistant PC quotes are comparable only when their test recipe and acceptance rule are comparable. Ask for the coated grade, wheel, load, cycles and haze result together. Then check the actual cleaner and fabricated sample. This guide helps a buyer read a Taber report and write a testable purchasing requirement; the hard-coated PC product page covers SinoPlastix sheet options and fabrication.

Send an abrasion requirement

Read the report in four passes

1. IdentityGrade, coating side, thickness and specimen batch.
2. RecipeMethod, wheel, load, cycles and conditioning.
3. MeasurementInitial haze, abrasion result, units and raw report wording.
4. DecisionProject limit, actual cleaning exposure and approved sample.

A useful buyer question is: “Will the offered coated face on my actual part stay within the agreed visual limit after the specified abrasion and cleaning exposure?” The report should identify what was tested. The drawing should identify which face is exposed. The purchase specification should state the pass/fail rule.

One published example, read without overstating it

Palram’s PALGARD technical table reports a Taber abrasion result of <2.0% haze under ASTM D1044, 100 cycles, CS-10S wheels and 500 g load. In a separate optical row, it lists <0.5% haze for a 3 mm clear sheet under ASTM D1003. The table does not state that the first figure is a post-test absolute haze value, so do not subtract the two figures or present the difference as measured haze growth.

These are typical figures for a named third-party coated PC product. They are a format example for writing an inquiry, not a SinoPlastix coating result or a guarantee for a quoted sheet. Request the report original for the specific offered grade and thickness from SinoPlastix sales.

Comparison checks that prevent a false winner

What differs between reports? Why it matters Buyer action
CS-10S versus CS-10F wheel Different abrasive wheels make a simple “lower haze wins” ranking unreliable. Ask for the same wheel and full test method, or commission a matched comparison.
100 versus 500 cycles, or different load Exposure severity changes with recipe. Specify cycles and load before comparing figures.
Initial haze versus abrasion result Optical clarity before wear and response to wear answer different questions. Record both as separately reported; retain the report’s wording and units.
Flat coupon versus cut or drilled part Edges and machining can affect the delivered sample. Inspect a fabricated first article with coated face and edges identified.
Dry Taber test versus your cleaner Wiping grit, solvent, coolant, temperature and contact time add different exposure. Agree a representative cleaning trial and visual limit.

Turn the numbers into a purchase requirement

Start with the surface that matters to the customer: view-through clarity, appearance under showroom lighting, or readable machine sightlines. State a maximum acceptable haze or visible damage after an agreed test. If the project uses a particular cleaner, add a separate exposure and inspection step. Approve a sample that includes the real cut edge, holes and any protective film removal sequence. Keep the approved sample and report with the drawing revision for repeat orders.

SinoPlastix can supply custom coated PC sheet and cut or machine it to an agreed drawing. We can confirm the offered grade, available report and fabrication route. Actual price and lead time depend on the order complexity and are confirmed in the written quote. For machine guarding, validate the complete guard assembly separately; an abrasion result alone does not establish impact containment.

Common questions

Does a lower Taber haze number always mean a better coating?

No. Compare only results with matched methods and conditions, including the wheel, load, cycles and how haze is reported. Then test the actual cleaner and use case.

Is a Taber report enough to approve a machine window?

No. It describes surface abrasion under a defined test. The completed window and its frame still need the relevant impact, visibility, mounting and safety review.

Can I request the original test report?

Yes. Common original reports can be requested privately from SinoPlastix sales for the offered grade and thickness. State the test method and acceptance rule you need; reports are not displayed on the website.
