Polycarbonate is impact resistant, but an unspecified sheet is not automatically bullet-resistant. Ballistic protection belongs to a tested transparent assembly: identified materials and thicknesses, laminations, frame, edge capture, fasteners, threat level, test standard and report scope must all match the installation.
Start with the threat and test standard
“Bulletproof” hides the decision that a security designer must make. Define the projectile, velocity or threat class, number and spacing of impacts, required witness condition, test temperature and governing standard. UL 752 and other security methods have specific classifications; one result must not be translated into an unmatched threat.
Read the complete report scope
A credible submittal names the product construction and specimen. Review every layer, nominal thickness, interlayer, surface treatment, overall dimensions, frame and retention detail. Confirm the laboratory, report number, method edition, result and limitations. A marketing excerpt without the complete assembly and tested report scope cannot support a substitution.
- Does the offered construction have the same layer sequence and grade?
- Are exposed edges, joints, holes and viewing dimensions within the report?
- Does the tested frame match the proposed support and bite?
- Are multiple-hit spacing and shot pattern applicable?
- Do aging, temperature or installation conditions require further evidence?
Keep material and assembly claims separate
Coupon impact strength can help screen a resin grade; it does not establish ballistic resistance. Increasing a monolithic sheet thickness does not create a universal threat rating. The projectile can be stopped while spall, excessive deformation, edge release or frame failure still makes the system unacceptable.
Control installation and substitution
The approved drawing should show frame material, edge engagement, clearances, gaskets, fasteners and interfaces with surrounding construction. Installation inspection verifies that the delivered assembly matches that drawing. Cutting a tested panel, changing a hole, reducing edge capture or using another sealant can move the construction outside its evidence.
