Matte and frosted acrylic are finish descriptions, not universal optical grades. A matte surface can reduce reflections or change touch and appearance; a frosted construction can scatter light and obscure detail. Specify the viewed face, lighting task, transmission/haze evidence and physical sample rather than selecting from the label alone.
Describe the visual task
For privacy, record the viewer and object distances plus front or back lighting. For an illuminated sign, record lamp type, spacing, cavity depth and acceptable hotspot visibility. For a display surface, define glare, cleaning and which face is touched. The same sample can look different when those conditions change.
Separate surface texture from bulk diffusion
A surface texture redirects light at the face and changes gloss. Diffusing particles or colour within the sheet can affect light through its thickness. Some products combine both. Confirm whether one or two faces are treated and whether orientation matters to printing, bonding, cleaning or installation.
Compare measurable properties carefully
Luminous transmittance, haze and clarity answer different questions. Values are comparable only when the method, specimen thickness, colour and conditioning match. Neither a high haze value nor a bright sample alone proves that a finished light box will have even illumination.
Approve two sample states
- Inspect the unlit sheet against the intended background and viewing distance.
- Place it in a mock-up using the project lamps, pitch and cavity.
- Review both faces for gloss, hotspots, colour and visible marks.
- Trial the planned cleaner and fabrication on the exact finish.
- Retain the signed sample with its grade, thickness and orientation.
Consider fabrication and care
Sawing, routing and edge finishing can produce a different appearance from the broad face. Polishing may create a glossy edge beside a matte surface. Abrasive cleaning can permanently change texture. Do not promise that a finish “hides scratches”; test the expected handling and maintenance instead.
