Plexiglass is a trade name used for acrylic sheet; acrylic is the material family commonly identified as PMMA. The useful purchasing question is not which word sounds stronger, but which manufacturer, grade, production process, thickness tolerance and fabrication behaviour the quotation actually identifies.
Separate material from trade name
“Acrylic,” “PMMA” and “plexiglass” are often used interchangeably in conversation, yet a trade name does not describe every acrylic sheet. It may point to a particular manufacturer’s portfolio. A specification should state the accepted brand or equivalent criteria instead of assuming that any clear PMMA has identical optical, weathering, tolerance or fabrication data.
Distinguish cast and extruded acrylic
Cast and extruded sheet use different production routes. The route can influence thickness variation, residual stress, surface quality and response to machining, polishing, bonding or thermoforming. Those are selection inputs, not a rule that one process is always superior. Ask for the offered sheet’s data and verify the operation that matters to the part.

Write an auditable specification
- name PMMA/acrylic as the material and state whether a named trade grade is mandatory;
- identify cast or extruded route if it controls performance or fabrication;
- define thickness, size, colour, surface, masking and acceptable variation;
- state the test method for any optical, mechanical or fire requirement;
- describe cutting, drilling, polishing, forming, printing or bonding after delivery.
Avoid false substitutions
Acrylic is not another name for polycarbonate. Both are transparent thermoplastics, but they differ in impact response, stiffness, surface behaviour, processing and available grades. A substitution review must return to the application: load, environment, appearance, cleaning, fabrication and applicable report scope.
