A flat or low-slope polycarbonate roof is a designed panel system, not a sheet laid level between supports. Drainage slope, deflection, joints, edge capture, thermal movement, flashings and maintenance access determine whether water is shed safely.
Define “flat” as a roof geometry
Architectural “flat roof” usually means low slope, not zero fall. The selected panel system sets its permitted pitch and joint arrangement. The project designer must account for construction tolerances and deflection so local ponding does not reverse the intended drainage.
Choose a system before sizing sheet
Solid sheet fixed to a custom frame, multiwall panels in glazing bars and standing-seam polycarbonate systems have different spans, movement details and water paths. A material-only quotation cannot establish system performance. Identify profiles, fasteners, seals, perimeter conditions and transitions to adjacent roofing.
Check water, load and movement together
- design wind, snow, rain and maintenance loads;
- support spacing and allowable service deflection;
- panel length and temperature range for expansion clearance;
- joint height, lap direction, flashing and gutter capacity;
- penetrations, upstands and interfaces with opaque roof areas.
Adding fasteners does not cure an inadequate slope or an unsupported joint. Excess restraint can also concentrate stress and prevent thermal movement. Use the manufacturer’s system detail and engineering basis for the exact construction.
Plan condensation and cleaning
Indoor humidity, cold exterior conditions and panel geometry can create condensation. Decide where moisture can drain and how closures or ventilation work. Maintenance methods must avoid incompatible cleaners and unsafe walking on translucent areas.
Review a buildable edge detail
The perimeter is often more critical than the broad panel. Verify edge bite, profile continuity, end stops, compatible gaskets and room for movement. Mock up a corner, termination and penetration when leakage consequences are high.
SinoPlastix can review an offered polycarbonate panel against a roof schedule and cut list. Waterproofing design, load calculation and installed-system acceptance remain with the project engineer, system supplier and roofing contractor.
