Install polycarbonate roof panels from the selected system’s drawings, not from a generic screw-spacing rule. Confirm the protected face, support spacing, panel direction, slope, laps, thermal movement, fastener zones, closures and flashing before material is cut or drilled.
Set out the roof before opening the packs
Check that purlins or rafters are aligned, clean and built to the approved spacing. Verify drainage direction and the location of end laps, side laps, ridges, eaves and penetrations. Store panels flat or as directed, protected from wind, heat and trapped moisture. Do not leave protective film exposed longer than the supplier permits.
Orient the sheet correctly
Where a panel has a designated UV-protected face, install that face outward and preserve its identification until inspection. Multiwall ribs normally run in the drainage direction so condensate can leave the channels. Corrugated profile overlap direction should respond to prevailing weather and the system detail.
Allow thermal movement
Polycarbonate changes dimension with temperature. The system detail must provide clearance at holes, edges and profiles without losing weather sealing or edge capture. Oversized holes are used in some mechanically fastened systems, but the required diameter, washer, location and tightening method come from the chosen product guidance.
Over-tightening can dish a panel or lock movement; under-tightening can leave an ineffective seal. Drive fasteners square to the support and use compatible components. Never treat extra screws as a substitute for the specified span, profile or flashing.
Close channels and manage water
Multiwall ends require the specified combination of closure tape and profiles to limit contamination while allowing drainage where designed. Flashings and seals must shed water rather than depend on a bead of sealant across an unsupported gap. Use only cleaners and sealants confirmed compatible with the offered sheet.
Inspect the completed installation
- protected face and panel/rib direction match the drawing;
- supports, laps, clearances and edge engagement are present;
- fasteners are square, correctly located and not crushing the sheet;
- closures, flashings and drainage paths are continuous;
- film, swarf and construction debris are removed safely.
