Polycarbonate vs Glass: Choosing a Glazing Material
Compare impact, scratch resistance, weight, insulation and outdoor exposure for the offered grade and complete glazing assembly.
Polycarbonate and glass solve different glazing problems. Polycarbonate sheet is lighter and can tolerate many impacts that would break ordinary annealed glass, while glass normally offers a harder, more scratch-resistant surface. Neither material is automatically suitable for overhead glazing, security glazing or a structural application without a tested grade and approved assembly.

| Decision factor | Polycarbonate sheet | Glass |
|---|---|---|
| Impact and safety | Compare the offered grade, thickness and fixing against the specified impact method. | Specify annealed, toughened or laminated construction and its tested safety class. |
| Surface appearance | Uncoated PC can scratch; ask about a hard-coated grade and cleaning restrictions where appearance matters. | Typically harder at the exposed surface; breakage and edge details still matter. |
| Weight and handling | Lower sheet mass may simplify handling, but framing and fixing must be engineered. | Heavier for a comparable sheet size; the correct glass construction may require additional layers. |
| Thermal performance | A multiwall panel and a solid sheet have different U-values; use the offered construction’s test data. | Single, double and coated insulating-glass units differ substantially; compare complete systems. |
| Outdoor exposure | Confirm UV-protected face, weathering report and installation orientation. | Check coating, interlayer, seal and frame durability where applicable. |
Avoid one-number comparisons
Claims such as “250 times stronger” are not a substitute for naming the test method, specimen thickness and failure criterion. An ASTM D256 plastic impact value should not be divided by an unrelated glass result and presented as the safety performance of a finished window. For a project with fragment retention, blast, ballistic or overhead-glazing requirements, request the relevant assembly test report and involve the responsible designer.
Likewise, savings from a lighter frame or better insulation cannot be calculated from sheet price alone. Get comparable quotations for panel, frame, installation, maintenance and replacement under the same project conditions. Do not transfer a greenhouse example to a warehouse skylight or a machine guard.
Which route should a buyer take?
- For an impact-tolerant transparent panel, start with the solid polycarbonate range and state the required test and mounting.
- For daylighting with insulation, compare the exact multiwall construction against the proposed glazing unit.
- For surface hardness and long-term optical appearance, compare specified glass with a tested hard-coated PC grade, including cleaning requirements.
- For cut profiles or drilled panels, send the approved drawing to polycarbonate fabrication.
The POLYVANTIS multiwall datasheet illustrates why published properties belong to a named construction rather than to every polycarbonate sheet. Send the glazing specification for an order-specific comparison.
